In the northwest corner of Santa Clara County you will find a remarkable charter city known as Palo Alto, California. Nestled in the San Francisco Bay Area, Palo Alto is bordered by East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Portola Valley and Stanford. Named after the coastal redwood tree, El Palo Alto, this splendid city was established by Leland Stanford Sr. at the same time he founded Stanford University. Palo Alto is home to part of Stanford’s campus, as well as a number of high-tech companies such as Ford Research and Innovation Center, Hewlett-Packard, Skype and Tesla Motors, among others.
With approximately 67,000 residents, Palo Alto is among the most educated cities in the United States, and is also one of the most expensive. Boasting a wonderful location just thirty-five miles south of San Francisco and fourteen miles north of San Jose, Palo Alto is composed of twenty-six square miles, one-third of which is open space. Residents of Palo Alto enjoy easy access to major thoroughfares including Interstate 280, Highway 84, Highway 92 and Highway 101. Residents also enjoy excellent public transportation options including bus and commuter rail service.
With all of these wonderful features, it is no wonder so many choose to call Palo Alto home. The homes found south of the Oregon Expressway were built primarily in the twenty years after World War II and include several Joseph-Eichler designed houses.
